Editorial score — not a blind average of the axes. How House Score works.

Best for

  • sofa arms, reading chairs, and beds that need a surface that slides over the lap, not just beside it
  • homeowners who want the authentic Eileen Gray original from the sole worldwide licensee, not one of the many copies
  • small or layered rooms where a glass top and open tubular-steel frame keep the floor visually clear

What it is

The Adjustable Table E1027 is Eileen Gray’s 1927 side table, designed for E-1027, the “Maison en bord de mer” she built at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin for herself and Jean Badovici. The name is the house’s code: E for Eileen, 10 for Jean (J is the 10th letter), 2 for B(adovici), 7 for G(ray). Aram, Gray’s world licence holder, says she wanted a table that could be used “over her knees” while sitting, or as an occasional side or bedside table. That is the whole idea: a C-shaped tubular frame whose open base slides under a sofa, chair, or bed so the round top hovers over you.

ClassiCon of Munich produces it as the sole worldwide licensee, in coordination with Aram Designs Ltd., London. Each Classic Collection piece carries an engraved number and lettering, and on this table the marking, including Gray’s signature, sits on the leg (per authorized retailer smow; check it on delivery).

Construction (ClassiCon product sheet): height-adjustable frame in chrome-plated tubular steel or black powder-coated steel. Tops come in clear crystal glass, grey smoked (Parsol) glass, or black lacquered metal. A separate Black Version pairs the black frame with crystal or smoked glass.

Dimensions (ClassiCon sheet): overall height 64–102 cm (~25.2–40.2 in), tabletop height 55–93 cm (~21.7–36.6 in), top diameter 52 cm (~20.5 in), base 46 cm (~18.1 in). DWR lists the chrome and clear-glass version at 39⅞ in H × 19¾ in W, 20 lb, with a 0.25 in clear glass top, sold requiring assembly.

Price band (observed 2026-10-05): Design Within Reach lists it at $1,795 (item 510790; a sitewide promo code was showing that day, so street price moves). ClassiCon’s own page reads from €882 excl. VAT. Hive carries it only as a matched 2-pack at $3,485–$4,063 depending on finish and top. DWR shows a 20-year warranty (terms apply), and ClassiCon publishes its own 20-year guarantee document. Country of manufacture is listed inconsistently: DWR says Made in Italy and Hive says Made in Germany. Confirm with the dealer if it matters to your spec.

This opens the side-table lane on Luxury House List. So far the furniture coverage is coffee tables (herman-miller-noguchi-coffee-table, knoll-florence-knoll-rectangular-coffee-table), dining (knoll-saarinen-dining-table), and storage, with no small occasional surface yet.

Who it’s for

Homeowners, architects, and designers furnishing a reading corner, a sofa end, or a bedside where a fixed end table always sits in the wrong place. It’s strongest when the room already has modernist tubular-steel or glass language (it sits naturally next to knoll-barcelona-chair, cassina-lc4-chaise-longue, or herman-miller-eames-lounge-chair-ottoman) and when one table has to do several jobs: laptop over the lap, a drink by the chair, a breakfast tray at the bed.

Skip it if you need real storage or a landing zone for heavy books and lamps, if the room is warm, traditional, and wood-forward (chrome and glass will read cold), or if small children and a light glass-topped cantilever don’t mix in your house. Also skip the countless unlicensed “E1027-style” copies. If you’re paying for this, buy the numbered ClassiCon original.

Standout details

  • Specs that matter (ClassiCon sheet and DWR): top Ø 52 cm / ~20.5 in · tabletop height 55–93 cm · overall height 64–102 cm · base 46 cm · chrome-plated or black powder-coated tubular steel · clear crystal, grey smoked glass, or black lacquered metal top · ~20 lb · DWR $1,795 observed · 20-year warranty (terms apply)
  • The mechanism: the height adjusts on a telescoping upright, and the open C base lets the top cantilever over a seat or mattress, not just sit beside it
  • Authenticity signal: ClassiCon is the sole worldwide licensee with Aram Designs, and the engraved number and signature mark the original
  • Tradeoffs: it’s a light-load surface (smow lists roughly 3–4 kg; confirm in ClassiCon’s instructions before trusting it with a lamp); chrome shows fingerprints and glass shows dust; the cantilever looks best uncluttered; about $1,800 for a 20-inch side table is a lot when copies sell for a fraction

Who’s specifying

MoMA holds an Adjustable Table in its permanent collection: object 533.1977, “Designed 1927 (this example 1976),” Aram Designs Ltd., London, chrome-plated tubular steel, sheet steel, and glass, credited to the Philip Johnson Fund and Aram Designs. It was listed as on view in Gallery 513 when checked on 2026-10-05. Aram dates its MoMA place to 1977, and DWR also notes it is in MoMA’s permanent collection. ClassiCon, DWR, Hive, and Aram all carry it as a current production classic, and those trade and retail channels are how residential specs actually land. No specific celebrity or named-home installation is claimed here.

Honest verdict

The E1027 is the side table that actually solves the side-table problem: it goes where you’re sitting and to the height you need, instead of where the floor plan left room. Design carries it, and usability is genuinely better than a fixed end table, held back only by a small top and a light load limit. House Score 4: a strong yes for modernist living rooms, reading chairs, and bedsides, but not Rare, because it’s a specialist surface rather than the one table every room needs, and its value case depends on buying the licensed ClassiCon original at full price. Draft until greenlit. Specify chrome with clear glass for the classic read, or the Black Version for darker rooms, and check the engraved marking on delivery.
