Luxury House List

Scored objects for serious homes.

Scoring

House Score methodology

House Score is a published editorial judgment, 1–5. It is not a star average, a survey, or a weighted formula you can reverse-engineer from the five axes.rating on every listing equalshouseScore — one number, said twice so machines and humans read the same thing.

What it is

We score objects that belong in serious homes: designer furniture, lighting, fixtures, hardware, and finishes. The reader is someone who specifies or buys at this tier — not browsing a catalog, not hunting a coupon. The question is simple: would we put this on a schedule, and with how much conviction?

Calibration

The scale is deliberately stingy at the top. Most honest objects are a 3. If everything is a 5, nothing is.

ScoreLabelMeaning
5RareRare. One or two per major lane, sitewide.
4Strong yesSpecify it. Clear yes for the right room.
3SolidThe default. Fine, honest, not a headline.
2SituationalWorks in a narrow condition. Not a default spec.
1Don’t botherSkip. The brief has a better answer.

A 5 is rare: at most one or two per major lane sitewide (furniture, lighting, fixtures, hardware, finishes). 3 is the default. We would rather under-score than inflate.

The five axes

Axes explain the score. They do not compute it. A listing can be a 4 with a 3 in value, or a 3 with a 5 in design. The overall number is the edit.

Design
Proportion, line, and whether the object still holds after the press cycle ends.
Craft
Materials, making, finish discipline — not a brand story about craft.
Usability
How it lives: light quality, sit, hang, hardware feel, service, dimming, install.
Durability
Whether it will still look intentional in five years of actual use.
Value
Price against what you actually get. Premium is allowed; empty premium is not.

Each axis is 1–5, same calibration as the overall score.

How a listing is written

Frontmatter carries the score, axes, verdict, and who it is for. The page renders a House Score card from that data — we do not ask writers to paste a second score table into the body. The body answers five questions:

Photography

Product images live in-repo under public/images/listings/. We use official brand or press-kit shots, credited in the figcaption. No hotlinking. No Unsplash hero for a specified SKU. A listing without rights-clear photography stays draft rather than wearing a fake photo.

What we do not do

How to read the card

The number is the call. The bars are the reasoning. The verdict is the sentence we would send a client. Example shape — not a claim about every object on the list:

What is House Score?
House Score is a published editorial judgment, 1–5, for whether Luxury House List would specify an object in a serious house and with how much conviction. It is not a star average, a survey, or a shopping metric.
Is House Score an average of the five axes?
No. Design, craft, usability, durability, and value explain the overall score. They do not compute it. A listing can be a 4 with a 3 in value.
What does a House Score of 5 mean?
Rare. At most one or two per major lane sitewide (furniture, lighting, fixtures, hardware, finishes). 3 is the default. A wall of 4s is a calibration failure.
Why does rating equal houseScore?
One number, said twice so machines and humans read the same thing. There is no second metric and no reviewCount.
Do you publish review counts or aggregate ratings?
No. Luxury House List does not invent review counts, celebrity installs, traffic stats, or crowd averages. Scores.json omits reviewCount on purpose.
Does sponsorship raise House Score?
No. Sponsored listings are marked. Sponsorship does not raise House Score. Empty affiliate URLs stay empty.
Where is the machine-readable score feed?
