Best for
- period, Georgian/Victorian, or warm-traditional bathrooms that want a real cast-iron roll-top as the room's centerpiece
- long-bodied bathers who want a deep double-ended soak (Drummonds' longest freestanding classic bath, ~76 in)
- renovations where the floor structure can be engineered for a ~447 lb tub plus 75 gal of water
What it is
The Spey (product code DAD1002) is a freestanding, double-ended cast iron roll-top bath on ball & claw feet from Drummonds, the British bathroom maker founded in 1988 by Drummond Shaw as an architectural-antiques dealer before it began making its own baths, brassware, and chinaware. Drummonds calls the Spey “our longest freestanding classic bath design” and “currently our most spacious cast iron bath”; the oversized roll-top rim is meant to make it easier to get in and out and more comfortable to lean on.
Construction (Drummonds product page, care page, and Our Story page): hand-poured, sand-cast iron (“to achieve a superior thickness”), with an interior of dry-frit vitreous enamel that Drummonds says it sprinkles by hand, up to five layers deep, and fuses to the iron in the kiln. The brand says it makes everything in its own factories, which its journal places “in Europe.” It does not name a single foundry country on the Spey page, so this listing doesn’t either. Its 2024 brochure gives about 20 hours to cast a bath, 24 hours to enamel it, and 16 hours to polish it. The product page says hand-polishing a Polished Iron exterior can take one foundry worker up to 14 hours.
Specs (product page + US tear sheet, observed 2026-10-16):
- Length 1935 mm (~76.2 in) · Width 865 mm (~34.1 in) · Height 630 mm (~24.8 in)
- Capacity 285 L / 75 gal
- Weight 203 kg / 447 lb (empty)
- Style: freestanding, with feet · size class Large (1800 mm+)
- Certificates listed on the US tear sheet: CE, IAPMO, MA, UKCA. Drummonds’ note: for IAPMO/MA-listed tubs, specify the slip-resistant version.
- Overflow: you can order it with or without the overflow hole drilled, at the same price
US price (drummonds-uk.com in USD, excl. tax; matches the official US tear sheet, observed 2026-10-16):
- Raw Iron Exterior: $11,055
- Primed Exterior (ready for your painter): $11,995
- Painted Exterior (spray-painted, matt or gloss): $12,615
- Polished Iron (lacquered, with natural foundry pitting): $13,550
Not included: the waste and overflow, the mixer, and freight. On the Spey page, Drummonds pairs it with its Plunger Overflow & Waste Unit at $3,390 (polished nickel or chrome, for baths with feet) or $3,725 (unlacquered brass), and its Mull floor-standing bath & shower mixer at $4,125–$5,440. Specify the full set and the Spey alone becomes a $15k–$20k+ line item before plumbing labor. US buyers can order from Drummonds’ New York showroom (A&D Building, 150 East 58th Street, 8th floor) or online in USD.
This opens the empty bathtub lane on Luxury House List. Fixtures coverage so far is faucets (vola-kv1-one-handle-mixer, waterworks-henry-lav-hls101, waterworks-finot-high-profile-lav-nls220, dornbracht-tara-kitchen-single-hole-mixer) plus one toilet (toto-neorest-nx2). It also pairs naturally with the traditional-finish lane opened by heath-ceramics-classic-field-tile and the British brass of armac-martin-cotswold-cup-pull.
Who it’s for
Homeowners, architects, and designers doing period, country, or warm-traditional bathrooms where the tub is the room’s anchor, and who want the real cast-iron-and-enamel object, not an acrylic or stone-resin lookalike. It’s strongest for tall bathers (at ~76 in it is Drummonds’ longest classic bath), in big rooms where a footed tub can float with space around it, and on projects that will specify the waste, mixer, and finish properly instead of value-engineering the fittings.
Skip it if the floor can’t be engineered for the load (by our arithmetic, 447 lb empty + 75 gal of water ≈ 625 lb comes to roughly 1,070 lb before a bather; have a structural engineer check it, especially on upper floors). Also skip it if the stair or elevator path can’t take a 76-in, 447-lb tub, if you want a minimal modern freestanding shape, if you need a step-in height lower than a ~24.8-in rim, or if a five-figure tub plus ~$3.4k waste breaks the budget. Anyone who wants a long warranty should note that Drummonds’ published guarantee is one year against manufacturing defects (care page), and made-to-order goods can’t be returned for natural variation.
Standout details
- Specs that matter: 1935 × 865 × 630 mm (~76.2 × 34.1 × 24.8 in) · 285 L / 75 gal · 203 kg / 447 lb · CE / IAPMO / MA / UKCA · $11,055–$13,550 by finish (excl. tax)
- Finishes: Raw Iron (textured anthracite, unfinished), Primed (ready to paint), Painted (spray-painted, matt or gloss), Polished Iron (hand-polished, lacquered, keeps foundry pitting “reminiscent of antique silver”)
- Craft signal: sand-cast iron + hand-applied fused vitreous enamel; Drummonds makes its own baths, brassware, and chinaware rather than rebadging
- Care reality: rinse and dry the enamel after use; use non-abrasive enamel-safe cleaners; fix dripping taps quickly or the enamel can stain. On the outside, no bathroom cleaners and no floor-cleaner splashes (they can damage the paint or lacquer that keeps the iron from rusting). If the exterior is scratched through to bare iron, it needs rust-inhibitor, primer, and paint or lacquer. Painted tubs come with a touch-up pot.
- Tradeoffs: very heavy; expensive at the tub alone and more so with fittings; only a one-year published guarantee; exterior finishes need care to avoid rust; slip resistance must be specified for IAPMO/MA listing; lead time is made-to-order and not published as a fixed figure, so confirm it at quote
Who’s specifying
Drummonds’ own project case studies show the Spey in US homes. One is Deirdre Doherty’s Los Feliz, California bathroom, which Drummonds says House Beautiful featured in its “Top 10 Bathrooms of the Year.” (That’s the brand’s claim; we didn’t independently find the original House Beautiful piece.) The other is a restored hillside villa near Malibu that runs two Speys, one in a custom dark grey with custom scroll feet. Beyond the Spey, Drummonds sells co-branded collections with Steven Gambrel, Pembrooke & Ives, and Marc Newson, and keeps a trade-facing showroom in New York’s A&D Building, a sign of where the brand’s US demand comes from. Drummonds’ “Kate Moss at Home” case study features its Mull taps and mentions roll-top baths, but it doesn’t name the Spey, so we don’t claim that placement. No other celebrity installs are claimed here.
Honest verdict
Luxury House List had no bathtub at all, and the Spey is the honest first one for the traditional side of the lane: a real cast-iron roll-top made by a company that pours its own iron and fires its own enamel, in the longest classic size it makes. House Score 4. Craft and durability are top-tier and the design is a well-proportioned version of a form that will never date, but value is a real drag. At $11,055–$13,550 for the tub, plus about $3.4k for Drummonds’ waste and a few thousand more for a mixer, you’re buying an heirloom object, not efficiency. The weight, the one-year guarantee, and the finish care are the costs of the real material. Draft until greenlit. Specify Painted or Polished Iron unless a decorator is finishing the outside on site, order slip-resistant if the jurisdiction needs IAPMO/MA listing, and get structural sign-off before anyone falls in love with it on an upper floor. A modern freestanding tub for contemporary schemes should come later as a separate entry, not a reason to downgrade this one.
