Editorial score — not a blind average of the axes. How House Score works.
Best for
- desks, consoles, and side tables that need iconic indirect light without another pendant or floor arc
- clients who already specify Castiglioni / Flos and want the table-lamp counterpart to Arco
- rooms that can host a ~25 lb glass-and-aluminum object with adjustable reflected glow
What it is
Taccia is Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni’s table lamp for Flos — conceived as turning a ceiling fixture upside down, put into production 1962, still the brand’s glass-and-aluminum ambassador. Brand thesis (Flos): crafted aluminum reflector (gloss white outside, matt white inside) resting on an adjustable transparent mouth-blown glass diffuser; fluted extruded-aluminum body that reads like a classical column but was designed as a radiator to disperse heat; nickel-plated metal base. Current LED edition: 28 W / 2700 K integrated array, dimmer 10–100%, plug-in remote supply with interchangeable plugs, IP20 indoor dry.
US product page (Black F6602030): 19.49 W × 7.48 L × 25.39 H in, ~24.56 lb, cord ~86.6 in / 2200 mm. Finishes on the tearsheet family: Black, Matt White, Silver anodised, Bronze anodised. Flos USA list for the full-size glass LED: $4,255 (site also shows periodic promo; treat street as soft). Taccia Small (16 W, ~14.7 × 19.1 in, from $1,735) and a lighter PMMA diffuser edition (LED-era return to the brothers’ original plastic brief) are separate SKUs — this listing centers the glass LED icon.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a 1962 Taccia (Gift of Atelier International Lighting, 1987; object 1987.18ab) — museum line, not a current-LED dimensions sheet.
Who it’s for
Homeowners and designers who want a Castiglioni table lamp that throws soft indirect / reflected light — not a shaded task cone — and who will buy Flos, not a lookalike bowl. Strong when the lighting plan already has a pendant and/or Arco and still needs a serious surface piece on a desk, console, or sofa side table. Scale and weight favor rooms that can give it real estate and a sturdy top.
Skip it if you need high-output task light for reading fine print, cannot place ~25 lb / ~20 in of glass bowl width, want under-$1k pricing, or prefer a small fabric shade. Also skip the glass SKU if you specifically want the lighter PMMA edition — different material story, different price band. Indoor dry only.
Standout details
- Specs that matter (Flos US / professional sheet): 28 W LED · 2700 K · dimmable 10–100% · indirect / asymmetric · IP20 · ~19.5 × 7.5 × 25.4 in · ~24.6 lb · 100–240 V · cord ~87 in · spare parts listed (diffuser/reflector, base, dimmer jack, driver kit)
- Craft signal: mouth-blown glass diffuser + spun/extruded aluminum; radiator-fluted base was heat engineering first, “Mercedes of lamps” mythology second (Achille’s own framing)
- Adjustability: glass bowl is not fixed — rotate / tilt the reflector-diffuser assembly to aim the bounce
- Tradeoffs: ambient / mood class, not a workhorse desk task lamp; footprint and weight are real; $4,255 list sits next to Arco money for a table piece; wax/fingerprint care on anodized bodies; LED module replaceable by a professional per Flos labeling
Who’s specifying
Design-literate residential work already in the Flos / Castiglioni orbit. Architectural Digest (Hannah Martin, Oct 2023) walks the 1958–1962 origin story, Achille’s “Mercedes of lamps” line (utilitarian cooling, not prestige), and published placements including architect Alex Cochrane’s London home, Joanne de Guardiola yacht work, and Nicolas Ghesquière’s Paris apartment — treat as press-documented interiors, not a Celebrity Homes roster. Abitare (May 2016) covered the LED/PMMA chapter that finally allowed the brothers’ original plastic brief. Brand history pages and Fondazione Achille Castiglioni material anchor the radiator-base / Ugo Mulas documentation. Met permanent collection confirms museum weight for the 1962 object.
No claim here that every AD-named room used the current LED SKU — cite the design lineage, then confirm finish and edition on the residential quote.
Honest verdict
Lighting on Luxury House List already covers pendant (PH 5), floor arc (Arco), sconce (TRIAD), and statement floor (Superwire F) — Taccia fills the empty table lamp slot with the Castiglioni piece that belongs next to Arco on any serious Flos edit. House Score 4, not a rare 5: design and craft are lane-strong and durability is excellent, but lighting already carries two sitewide 5s (Arco, PH 5), and value at $4k+ for a table lamp is honest taste drag. Draft until Press hosts official photography and greenlights. Spec Black or Bronze glass LED first; Small when the surface is tight; PMMA only when weight and the plastic-origin story matter more than the museum glass. Pair with Arco when the room needs Castiglioni overhead and Castiglioni on the table — same authorship, different job.
