Editorial score — not a blind average of the axes. How House Score works.

Best for

  • a reading corner that should still look correct in twenty years
  • rooms that can take a 95–100 lb leather-and-plywood object without apology
  • clients who will buy authorized Herman Miller or Vitra and skip the replicas

What it is

Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is Charles and Ray Eames’s 1956 lounge set — three molded-plywood shells, leather cushions, die-cast aluminum bases — built to look like “a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” Herman Miller has kept it in continuous production since the first year. Vitra holds the authorized European license. MoMA collected it; the form has not been restyled to chase a season.

US list for an authorized chair-and-ottoman set runs about $8,700–$11,500, depending on shell, leather, and size. Standard is 31.5 H × 33.5 W × 35 D in (seat 16 in). Tall is 33.25 H × 33.5 W × 37.75 D in (seat 16.5 in, deeper seat). Ottoman is 17.25 H × 26 W × 21.5 D in. The chair swivels. It does not recline. Two sizes, not a mechanism.

This is a sitting object with museum weight, not a recliner wearing plywood.

Who it’s for

Homeowners and designers who want the actual Eames lounge in a room that can take its mass and its grain — walnut, oiled walnut, Santos palisander, ebony ash — and who will wait for Herman Miller or Vitra instead of a “inspired by” listing. Strong fit for a library, a bedroom corner, or a living room that already speaks mid-century without costume.

Skip it if you need a reclining TV chair, a lightweight piece you can slide with one hand, or a street price under five thousand. Also skip if the schedule cannot live with made-to-order leather and a real dealer.

Standout details

  • Specs that matter: Standard 31.5 × 33.5 × 35 in · Tall 33.25 × 33.5 × 37.75 in · ottoman 17.25 × 26 × 21.5 in · ~95–100 lb chair · US list ~$8,700–$11,500 set · swivel, no recline
  • Sizes: Standard vs Tall is the real decision — seat depth and height, not a marketing SKU
  • Shells: walnut, oiled walnut, Santos palisander (oiled or clear coat), ebony ash; 2100 Series leather in black, white, and other stocked colors
  • Craft signal: hand-assembled; shock-mounted shells; authorized Herman Miller (US) or Vitra (Europe) only
  • Tradeoffs: it does not recline; replicas flood the market and look wrong in a year; palisander and custom leather push the top of the range; the object is heavy and visually loud if the room is already busy

Who’s specifying

Architects and interiors that already write Herman Miller or Vitra on the schedule — the set that shows up in museum collections (MoMA among them) and in rooms that want one correct lounge, not a furniture story. Trade is through authorized dealers; factory configuration is the only honest path.

No celebrity-home tour is cited here as a reason to buy it. The case is continuous production since 1956 and the authorized object versus everything that copies the silhouette.

Honest verdict

House Score 5 in furniture: design and craft are settled; durability is why it is still in production; usability loses a point because there is no recline and only two sizes; value is honest at this price if you keep it for decades. Specify authorized Herman Miller or Vitra. Choose Standard or Tall from a sit, not a photo. Do not pay museum money for a replica and call it close enough.
