Editorial score — not a blind average of the axes. How House Score works.
Best for
- reading chairs and sofa ends that need downward directional light, not an arc boom or sculptural glass floor wash
- Jacobsen / Danish modern interiors already speaking Egg, Swan, or Series 3300 angles
- homeowners who want the SAS Royal Hotel AJ family floor version opposite Louis Poulsen’s PH 5 pendant already on this list
What it is
AJ Floor Lamp is Arne Jacobsen’s directional floor fixture for Louis Poulsen — designed 1957, installed as part of his total interior for Copenhagen’s SAS Royal Hotel (now Radisson Collection Royal Hotel; hotel inauguration 1960). Louis Poulsen’s product copy frames the AJ lamp family as the design Jacobsen is most famous for worldwide. The family at the hotel also included table, smaller table, wall, and table-mounted versions; floor, table, and wall have stayed in production since the late 1950s. The official Arne Jacobsen site notes an earlier public outing at Interbau Berlin 1957, and later use at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford (1964) and Rødovre Library (1969).
Construction grammar (Louis Poulsen US product page + US cut sheet class): spun steel or stainless steel shade painted white inside; steel, stainless steel, or brass stem; die-cast zinc or stainless steel base. The shade tilts roughly 90° up/down for downward-directed light. Finishes listed by Louis Poulsen: White, Black, Pale Petroleum, Warm Sand, Soft Lemon, Electric Orange, Dusty Blue, Warm Grey, Stainless Steel Polished; Black and Warm Grey also come with polished brass (untreated brass will patina). US mounting: 9′ cord with plug, on/off foot switch, cULus, dry location.
US light source (official cut sheet / Lightology mfr sheet, A-19/medium / E26): 1 × 10 W max, delivered lumen figure 506, bulb not included. Louis Poulsen’s own reading tip: ~3000K for reading clarity, ~2700K for cozier mood. (Some authorized dealer pages list a higher max wattage — follow the manufacturer cut sheet at order.)
Dimensions & weight (US cut sheet): 10.8 W × 51.2 H in; painted finishes ~7.5–7.6 lb, stainless ~8.0 lb, brass/black and brass/warm grey ~8.2 lb. Dealer pages (DWR, Lightology) often quote shade projection closer to ~13 in D / ~12.8 in W — the cut sheet’s 10.8 in is the published width figure. Note: the Louis Poulsen US web product card currently shows “Weight: 14.6 lbs”, which matches the EU cut sheet’s ~14.6 kg figure and looks like a unit mislabel; use the US cut sheet pounds above.
Price band (observed 2026-10-13):
- Louis Poulsen US store: Stainless Steel Polished $1,875 (live cart on louispoulsen.com/en-us)
- Authorized US dealers (DWR, A+R, Lightology, MoMA Design Store): painted finishes $1,595; Black/Brass and Warm Grey/Brass $1,660; stainless $1,875
This opens the empty reading / directional floor-lamp lighting lane on Luxury House List. Existing floor coverage is flos-arco-led (arc boom over seating) and flos-superwire-f (sculptural glass floor). Same-brand pendant already covered: louis-poulsen-ph-5. Same-designer seating already covered: fritz-hansen-egg-chair.
Who it’s for
Homeowners, architects, and designers who need light aimed at a book, laptop edge, or sofa arm — and want Jacobsen’s taut oblique cone, not a parchment shade or a chrome boom. Strong when the room already speaks Danish modern geometry (Egg / Swan / Series 3300 angles), when a slender footprint next to a lounge chair beats a floor sculpture, and when the brief is “read here,” not “light the whole room.”
Skip it if you need ambient room wash or an uplight sculpture (flos-superwire-f, flos-taccia), want an arc that clears a sofa (flos-arco-led), refuse buying and choosing your own E26 bulb, or need high lumen output beyond the US 10 W max cut-sheet limit. Also skip soft fabric shades and “AJ-style” knockoffs — buy Louis Poulsen authentic.
Standout details
- Specs that matter (US cut sheet + LP US page, observed 2026-10-13): ~51.2 H × 10.8 W in · ~7.5–8.2 lb by finish · E26 / A-19 medium · 10 W max · 506 lm class · bulb not included · shade tilts ~90° · white interior · 9′ cord + foot switch · cULus dry · painted ~$1,595 / brass accents ~$1,660 / stainless $1,875
- Finish menu: White, Black, Pale Petroleum, Warm Sand, Soft Lemon, Electric Orange, Dusty Blue, Warm Grey, Stainless Steel Polished; Black + Warm Grey also with polished brass (patina expected)
- Craft signal: spun-steel shade + die-cast zinc (or stainless) base; continuous Louis Poulsen production since the late 1950s; SAS Royal Hotel gesamtkunstwerk provenance
- Tradeoffs: directional reading light, not ambient wash; bulb is your job (and the US max is lean); ~$1.6k–$1.9k is taste money for a single reading floor lamp; untreated brass will change; LP web weight figure disagrees with the US cut sheet — specify from the cut sheet
Who’s specifying
Louis Poulsen and the official Arne Jacobsen site document the SAS Royal Hotel total design and the AJ family’s role in it; Jacobsen’s own archive materials place the lamp at Interbau Berlin 1957, St. Catherine’s College Oxford, and Rødovre Library. MoMA Design Store sells the AJ Floor (painted finishes observed at $1,595; stainless $1,875) and notes that Jacobsen and Louis Poulsen are both represented in MoMA’s collection — that is not a verified accession of this exact floor SKU (MoMA’s published Jacobsen collection highlights include stacking chairs and the 1957 flatware, not an AJ Floor object number found in this research). No named celebrity home install for this exact SKU is claimed here; treat placement as schedule judgment. Serious US buys go through Louis Poulsen US, MoMA Design Store, DWR, and other authorized dealers.
Honest verdict
If Luxury House List already covers arc booms and sculptural glass floors, AJ Floor fills the empty “I need light aimed at the chair” slot — Jacobsen’s oblique cone as the clear Danish modern answer, not a niche alternate. House Score 4: design and craft carry it; usability and value stay honest (directional only, bulb DIY, $1.6k+ ticket). Not Rare — lighting already holds several 5s (flos-arco-led, louis-poulsen-ph-5, artemide-tolomeo-table, vitra-noguchi-akari-1a), and this is the strong lane open, not a claim that every serious home must default here. Draft until greenlit — specify Black or stainless first unless a color finish is the point, respect the US 10 W cut-sheet max, and pair it with fritz-hansen-egg-chair or a deep lounge when the brief is reading, not room wash.
