Best for
- dining tables and kitchen islands that need glare-free downward light
- mid-century or quiet contemporary rooms that want the Danish dining-pendant default
- clients who will buy authorized Louis Poulsen, not a layered knockoff
What it is
The PH 5 is Poul Henningsen’s layered pendant for Louis Poulsen, introduced 1958. Named for the 50 cm (~19.7”) main-shade diameter, it applies Henningsen’s reflective three-shade geometry so most light goes down to the table while the fixture also throws soft lateral light and illuminates itself. A frosted glass diffuser on the lower shade keeps the downward beam glare-free. Louis Poulsen’s own product story: designed so changing bulb shapes would not reintroduce glare — the “any bulb” dining lamp that became the PH lamp in Denmark.
Dimensions (full size): 500 × 267 × 500 mm (~19.7” W × 10.5” H). Materials: spun aluminum (also brass/copper shade options), spun-steel lower shade, rolled-aluminum struts, frosted glass diffuser. Finish menu spans White Classic, White Modern, monochromes, pastel/hue gradients, and metal (brass/copper) editions; untreated metal shades patinate. US authorized dealers (e.g. Design Within Reach, Lightology) commonly list ~$990–$1,715 depending on finish; classic white often around $1,365 at specialty lighting shops. Typical US electrical notes from dealers: E26 / A21, 22W LED bulb class (bulb often not included), ~144” adjustable cord, UL / damp-rated on many listings — confirm the exact SKU cut sheet at order. Made in Denmark. A PH 5 Mini (30 cm) exists as a scaled sibling; this listing is the full 50 cm icon.
Who it’s for
Architects, designers, and homeowners who want the Scandinavian dining-pendant default — soft, glare-free light over a table or island without a showpiece chandelier. Strong when the brief is mid-century calm, Danish restraint, or a contemporary room that still wants an honest hanging light with cultural weight.
Skip if you need high-output task flood for a workbench, a massive dining chandelier presence, outdoor wet-location hanging, or a sub-$300 Amazon layered copy. Skip knockoffs — the geometry only works when the shade ratios are right.
Standout details
- Specs that matter: Ø 50 cm / H ~26.7 cm · three-shade glare control + frosted lower diffuser · E26 residential path on US SKUs · ~12’ cord class · Denmark build
- Finishes: White Classic (historically with small red/blue color-correcting inserts on the classic story), White Modern, monochrome and hue gradients, brass/copper metal editions that patinate
- Craft signal: continuous Louis Poulsen production of Henningsen’s shade system; Architonic/LP materials language is spun metal + frosted glass, not costume plastic
- Tradeoffs: one size dominates dining (Mini is a different brief); colored finishes are taste bets; metal editions want honest patina expectations; bulb/driver details vary by market SKU — read the cut sheet
Who’s specifying
Authorized Louis Poulsen residential and contract paths (DWR, Lightology, showrooms). est living’s ICON feature documents real residential use: Renato D’Ettorre Architects (with Belinda Brown) over a Danish dining set in a Kyama, NSW house; also credited placements in homes tied to Nick Tobias, Eva-Marie Prineas / Studio Prineas (House Gezellig). Brand and Architonic copy still treat it as the glare-free dining/kitchen/hallway workhorse. No invented celebrity dining rooms beyond sourced press.
Honest verdict
If Arco is the floor-lamp Rare and Apparatus Triad covers quiet wall jewelry, PH 5 is the hanging dining Rare — House Score 5 because the shade logic still defines glare-free residential pendants, not because every room needs a hue gradient. White Classic or White Modern is the safe first buy; metal and monochrome are for clients who mean it. Draft until photos + Press — when it ships, lead with Ø50 cm, finish, and “authorized Louis Poulsen only.” For a Saarinen (or any serious) dining table that needs light without glare theater, this is still the default answer.
